24 East 72nd Street, 1895.
This five-story brownstone was designed by McKim, Mead & White for Mrs. Ruth Brown. The home was complete in 1895 but Brown sold the house to Alva Vanderbilt before ever even moved in. The freshly (and scandalously) divorced Alva was forced to leave her Fifth Avenue 'Petit Chateau' following the end of her marriage. Despite an initial shunning by the moneyed society after the divorce, Alva was welcomed back into the fold soon when she married her daughter to the Duke of Marlborough. The reception was held at Alva's new brownstone, a brunch for 115 guests.
Alva herself also married at this house, a quiet wedding in January 1896 to a friend of her ex-husband, Oliver Belmont. Alva sold the house a few years later. It remained a private residence until 1949. Razed two years later for a simple, boxy two-story building, but the corner lot has recently had a facelift. Between 2008 and 2010 Ralph Lauren erected a new building to house his second flagship store. The Beaux Arts-inspired building was an homage to grand Gilded Age mansions such as Mrs. Brown's House and the James Duke House.
