"First milestone ('1 mile to City Hall'), Bowery and Prince Street, 1897."
In 1769 the city’s Common Council installed 14 milestones radiating away from City Hall (then at Wall and Nassau Streets). Additional markers were erected in 1812 and 1822. It is unknown from which batch this milestone dates. (The photographic notes refer to it as the 'first.') This location at Prince Street was likely not its first home, as the milestones had to be moved after the new City Hall opened in 1811.
Though a number of milestones can still be found on the streets (and a couple more can be seen in NYC museums), this milestone has been lost to history.
