Montague Street Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, October 7, 1958.
The Montague Street Branch opened in 1869 as the Brooklyn Mercantile Library Association of the City of Brooklyn, a consolidation of the resources of the Brooklyn Athenaeum and Mercantile Library on Atlantic Avenue. It became a branch of the Brooklyn Public Library system in 1903.
The branch was demolished in 1962, just three years shy of Brooklyn Heights’ designation as the city’s first Historic District.
