15 St. Marks Place, ca. 1970.
The business seen here on St. Marks Place is Paul McGregor Haircutters. Before finding fame as a stylist, McGregor had worked as a longshoreman, sandhog, and truck driver. He opened his shop in 1965 and within a decade was well-known for having invented the shag haircut, which he famously gave to actress Jane Fonda. After moving on from hair styling, McGregor transformed this location into the world’s smallest roller-skating disco, a bar called McGregor’s Garage, and finally BoyBar, a gay nightclub well known for its drag scene.
