Willow and Poplar Streets; Changing New York
Nos. 1-3-5-7-9 Poplar Street, Brooklyn.
Poplar Street, between Columbia Heights and Willow Street, May 14, 1936.
Local activism managed to save much of Brooklyn Heights — specifically, the corridor along Hicks Street — from Robert Moses’s wrecking ball, but not every block was so lucky. This section of Poplar Street was razed during the 1950s to make way for the triple-cantilever sections of the Brooklyn-Queens expressway, which runs roughly where photographer Berenice Abbott stood as she captured this scene. Today, the land where these houses stood is the Hillside Park dog run.
