Sunbathing in front of large free standing mansion, 1937.

This Berenice Abbott photograph depicts sunbathers and a dog on the expansive lawn that surrounded this large home at 27th Avenue and 9th Street. Once the streets closest to the East River in Astoria were lined with large 18th and 19th century homes. Much like this one, which has been replaced with a large nondescript brick apartment building, most were torn down by the mid 20th century.
