Livingston Street and Boerum Court. Elks Club
Brooklyn Elks Lodge, 1929.
The Beaux-Arts Elks lodge was designed by McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1926. The handsome limestone and terra cotta building featured amenities including a pool, bowling alley, and a theater. However, the Elks tenure was the be short lived: in 1940, the building became the headquarters of the New York Department of Education.
The city sold the building in 2003, and it has since been adapted for high-end residential. The theater, accessed by the 22 Boerum Place entrance, has been home to the ISSUE Project Room avant-garde performance arts organization since 2012.
