West Street (at left) and Telegraph Square (also Dey Street), looking generally east, August 12, 1936.
The block of Dey Street between West and Washington Streets was named Globe Square in 1911 after the newspaper the New York Evening Globe. In 1923 the Globe merged with the New York Sun. The New York Telegram and Evening Mail took over the nearby offices of the Globe and as such the Square was renamed for the new tenant.
This entire area including this intersection was demapped in the 1960s in the planning for the World Trade Center.
