Designed by famed sculptor John Quincy Adams Ward, the Pilgrim Statue of Central Park depicts one of the men who landed at Plymouth Rock in November 1620. It was created for the 75th anniversary of the New England Society. Dedicated in 1885, the work stands atop a pedestal designed by American architectural master Richard Morris Hunt. The base features four bas-reliefs illustrating significant aspects of the Pilgrims’ landing. Pilgrim Hill, which descends from the monument, is a popular and long-standing locale for winter sledding.
In 1979 the Central Park Conservancy began their restoration work on the park's impressive statue collection with this piece.
