1908
Church of All Souls, ca. 1908.
The bold, polychrome Byzantine Revival church was designed by Jacob Wrey Mould and completed in 1855. Mould used red and yellow stone, from Philadelphia and Italy, respectively, to create a distinctive — and divisive — visual effect. The church earned nicknames, including “Church of the Holy Zebra” and “Beefsteak Church.”
By the early 20th century, the building was somewhat worse for wear and was sold for development in 1929. Two years later, it was destroyed in a fire.
