Police Sergeant Jim Churchill was just a regular working cop at the turn of the century. After 20 years on the force, he was named an acting captain of a precinct in the Bowery in 1901. That position was short-lived as he was soon dismissed for "neglect of duty." Supposedly Churchill didn't work hard enough to close down illegal businesses in his neighborhood, including brothels and bars that served alcohol unlawfully on Sundays. In an ironic twist, after being fired for not closing more bars, Churchill opened his own!

The bar and eatery at 1420 Broadway between 39th and 40th Street was a rousing success! He moved into a large space (seen here) at 46th Street and Broadway in 1906 where he could seat more than 350 patrons. After one more move to a brand new three-story terra cotta and brick building at 49th Street, Churchhill's grew to be world famous. Closed with the financial ruination of Prohibition, the final location of Churchill's became a Chinese restaurant before being demolished in 1937.
