216-218 Columbia Heights, ca. 1977.

Built in 1870, the Italianate row house at no. 216 (on the right) was the residence of Henry Evelyn Pierrepont Jr. The Pierrepont family played a significant role in the development of Brooklyn. Hezekiah Pierrepont, Henry's grandfather, was an investor and later part-owner in Robert Fulton's steamboat operation. In 1816, Brooklyn received a charter as a village from the state of New York, largely due to the influence of Hezekiah Pierrepont and other prominent landowners and its new importance as the landing point of the regularly scheduled ferry service across the East River. His family is commemorated by nearby Pierrepont Street.
