When Abbott photographed an old-fashioned milkwagon in 1936, New York City’s milk industry was rapidly changing. Distribution was dominated by Sheffield Farms and Borden Company. One-third of their daily three million quarts of milk and one million quarts of cream was still delivered by horses, the rest by truck. In 1938, Sheffield Farms opened a $2.5 million plant and replaced horse-drawn wagons with motorized vehicles. Abbott took this photograph on Grove Street, a few blocks from her Commerce Street home.
