Subway construction on Ashland Place, north of Lafayette Avenue, January 30, 1911.

The excavation underway was for the BMT Fourth Avenue line, which runs under Ashland Place between Fulton Street and the start of Fourth Avenue at Flatbush Avenue. The elevated line in the middle ground is the Fulton Street El.
