"Wooster Street, south from Grand Street to its southern end at Canal Street, showing the New York Telephone Building, 1933."
The New York Telephone Building at 32 Sixth Avenue, now called the AT&T Building, (seen here from the corner of Grand and Wooster Streets) is an Art Deco skyscraper. Constructed in 1932 (from a much smaller original building) by the firm of Voorhees, Gmelin and Walker, the building housed the technical offices and equipment for the AT&T's transatlantic communications. A grand 27-story structure that highlights classic Art Deco features, including asymmetrical massing, striped motifs, and light colored brick parapets at the roof line.
Equally spectacular is the lobby of the building, which features a tiled world map (appropriate for a long distance communication building) and mosaics with themed on the seven continents.
Both the interior and exterior of the building are landmarked.
