Carmine Street buildings slated for demolition ahead of the downtown extension of Sixth Avenue, July 30, 1926.
Prior to the 1920s extension, Sixth Avenue terminated at Carmine Street. The extension and associated demolitions were undertaken for two purposes: facilitating construction of IND subway tracks and providing a connection for vehicular traffic to/from the Holland Tunnel, via Canal Street.
