Pelham Bay Park War Memorial [Bronx Victory Memorial.]
Bronx Victory Memorial, 1932.
Designed by architect and landscape architect John J. Sheridan, and sculptors Belle Kinney and Leopold Scholz, the Bronx Victory Memorial was constructed in 1932 and dedicated in 1933 to honor to nearly 1000 soldiers from the Bronx who died during World War I. An original memorial, created in 1921, consisted of a bronze plaque and planted tree for each of the 947 men along the Grand Concourse. The widening of the boulevard and the subway construction of the late 1920s necessitated the removal of the memorial trees. The Bronx Victory Memorial is not only the raised terrace with the single, soaring, Corinthian column, but also a landscaped plaza that includes a grove of some of the original trees. After decades of environmental wear and vandalism, the memorial was restored to its original glory and rededicated on Veteran's Day (formerly Armistice Day) 2001.
