East 29th Street. Little Church Around the Corner
Church of the Transfiguration, ca. 1912.
This Neo-Gothic Episcopal Church, completed in 1849, is the earliest house of worship still extant in the neighborhood of Madison Square.
The sanctuary, also known as the Little Church Around the Corner, sits a few yards back from East 29th Street, leaving room for an entrance walkway and small front garden. The entrance to the church grounds is marked by a lich-gate designed by Frederick C. Withers and installed in 1896 as a gift of Mrs. Franklin Hughes Delano.
