Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, ca. 1978.

New York’s most infamous hospital, the Renaissance Revival Bellevue Psychiatric Ward was built in 1931 to treat a broad swath of the city’s often-indigent mentally ill population. Prominent inpatients included Norman Mailer, Edie Sedgwick, and Mark David Chapman (John Lennon’s Assassin).

The Bellevue Psychiatric Ward closed in 1984. Today, the facility is partially occupied by a men’s shelter.
