Lexington Avenue and East 45th Street. Grand Central Station and Post Office.
Grand Central Post Office, ca. 1910.
Constructed by the associated architecture firms of Reed & Stem and Warren & Wetmore, the Grand Central Post Office was completed in 1909, three years before Grand Central Terminal (by the same architects) was finished. It is the oldest surviving structure of the area that became Terminal City. When opened the entire structure was devoted to postal functions.
At seven stories, the post office is considerably shorter than most of the Terminal City structures (excepting GCT, itself). In 1992, though, a 31-story tower was built within and on top of the 1909 building.
