[107th United States Infantry war memorial.]
107th Infantry Memorial, ca. 1935.
A bronze figural group depicting seven larger-than-life-sized World War I soldiers in battle, the 107th Infantry Memorial honored the dead of the Seventh Regiment. Created by sculptor Karl Illava (who was a sergeant with the 107th) and placed on a massive base designed by architects Rogers and Haneman, the"doughboys" seems to be advancing out of the woods of Central Park towards the Regimental headquarters a few blocks east. The monument was dedicated on September 27, 1927, the ninth anniversary of a decisive battle at the Hindenburg Line, where the 107th helped secured a victory that turned the tide of the war.
