Johnston Bldg. Broad St. & Exchange Pl.
Johnston Building, 1915.
The 15-story Johnston Building was designed by James B. Baker and constructed in 1895-1896. It replaced a small brick building that dated to the early decades of the 19th century. The limstone clad, streel-frame office building was advertised as being "absolutely fireproof." Tenants of the building included Flint, Eddy & American Trading Co., an import and export firm, as well as the New York office of the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company.
The building was replaced by the 48-story Continental Bank Building, completed in 1932 by the firm of Cross and Cross.
