Completed in 1923, the North Channel Bridge was forecasted to last a century, but by the late 1980s had deteriorated beyond repair. A new bridge, constructed immediately alongside, the original span, was named for the late Congressman Joseph P. Addabbo, who represented New York's 5th and 7th districts for 35 years.
