The bungalows behind the couple seated on the boardwalk were built in two rows east of Beach 24th Street, around 1921. In the early 20th century, this section of Far Rockaway was a popular vacation destination for working class New Yorkers, leading to a boom in bungalow construction near the seaside.

By mid-century, the population of vacationers had waned, and many of the bungalows fell into disrepair or were demolished as the neighborhood became a target for urban renewal under Robert Moses. At right are the buildings of the Wavecrest Gardens Apartments, a middle class development completed in 1952.

In 2013, the remaining hundred-odd bungalows were consolidated into the Far Rockaway Beach Bungalow Historic District, under the auspices of the US National Register of Historic Places.
