34th Street, viewed from the exit of the Queens-Midtown Tunnel, ca. 1985.

This is the view that greeted motorists entering Manhattan via the Queens-Midtown tunnel: the dilapidated remains of No. 214 East 34th Street, the former “Furniture Exhibition Building.”

Today, a new building has replaced No. 214, but the 34th Street sign (upper right) remains.
