Hotel Edison, c. 1930.
Completed in 1931, the Hotel Edison was designed by Herbert J. Krapp, a well-known designer of theatres. On the opening day of the hotel, Thomas Edison switched on the electricity. The Art Deco style hotel opened with space enough for 1000 guests and a large ballroom. The ballroom was converted into a theatre in 1950 and hosted theatrical productions until 1991, when it was changed back into a ballroom space. The interiors of the building showcased its Deco style with terraced hallways with gold-trimmed mirrors and a mural lined lobby.
The building also was the location of the well-loved Cafe Edison, a Polish style dinner in opulent former formal dinning room of the hotel. Cafe Edison unfortunately closed in 2014.
