Clinton Street, Brooklyn Heights, February 12, 1960.

This Brooklyn Heights street scene includes No. 182 Clinton Street (center, second from corner), known as the New York residence of Bill W., the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.

A World War I veteran and stock speculator who lost money in the 1929 crash, Bill was a sufferer of alcoholism who began his recovery in 1934. The next year, Bill began to host growing meetings of recovering alcoholics like himself at his Brooklyn home.

Since Bill's death, the building has become a nondescript landmark (contrary to local legend, the stoop has nine steps, not twelve), unlike Bill's Akron, Ohio home, which has been converted to a museum.
