Varitype Building, ca. 1985.
Designed in an Arts and Crafts style in 1907 by Fred Ebeling, the Varitype Building originally housed studio and manufacturing spaces on its upper floors. Painter John Sloan had studio space in the building in the 1910s and it is featured prominently in his 1922 painting, "City from Greenwich Village."
In 1926, 1929, and then again when the building was converted to condos in 1982 the interior, exterior, and ground floor were altered. These modifications including window replacement, a drastic new look (not historically accurate) for the ground floor commercial space, and considerable changes to the facade at the top floor.
