“Residence of J. J. Audubon Esq,” watercolor, 1857.
The naturalist, ornithologist, and namesake of the Audubon Society, John James Audubon purchased a 20-acre estate on the Hudson River in 1841, in what was then a wooded area. By 1911, the house had fallen into disrepair. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to move the structure to city parkland, it was demolished in 1931.
