23rd Street, looking east from about Seventh Avenue, September 14, 1928.
The building at center, 71 West 23rd Street, is home to the Freemason Garabaldi Lodge #542. The 19-story loft building was constructed between 1911 and 1913 in a neo-Renaissance style by Free Mason Harry P. Knowles. The structure was always meant to be, and continues to be, a means of generating income to the support the functions of the Masons. Spaces in the building have always been rented to organizations and companies as offices and event spaces. The building offers at least 15 rooms for events of various sizes with varied and spectacular interior design. The ceremonial functions of the Mason's are located in the 1909 building that fronts West 24th Street and can be reached through a through-block pedestrian passageway.
Well-known members of this lodge have included Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, John Jacob Astor, and Harry Houdini.
