Father Francis Patrick Duffy statue, 1937.

Father Duffy was a military chaplain and priest who served the local Times Square community as pastor of the Holy Cross Church, located at 237 West 42nd Street. A French Canadian, Duffy arrived in New York in 1893 to be a teacher. In the 1890s he was ordained a priest and spent the next 20 years serving as a seminary instructor in Yonkers and a military chaplain during the Spanish-American and First World Wars. He returned to the city after WWI and became pastor to the Time Square church. He served the community until his death in 1932. In 1940 he was a character in the movie "The Fighting 69th," based on the story of the New York Infantry Regiment during the First World War.

The sculpture, which sits in Father Duffy Square, right in the middle of Times Square, was created by Charles Keck, who also created sculptures for the Brooklyn War Memorial. The more than life size figure stands in front of a Celtic cross and was unveiled on May 7, 1937. Photographer Berenice Abbott happened to capture the statue just prior to its debut.
