Colony Club Ca. 1944

In 1903, a group of women led by Florence Harriman founded the Colony Club in order to provide women with a space comparable to many of the city's men only clubhouses. Raising $500,000, helped by the club's treasurer Anne Morgan, one of the richest women in the world, the Club commissioned Stanford White to build a club house at 120 Madison Avenue. Completed in 1908, the Colony Club only inhabited this property until 1913 whereupon it commissioned it current clubhouse at 564 Park Avenue (seen here).

Designed by Delano & Aldrich in the Colonial Style, the Colonial Club's Park Avenue Clubhouse was completed in 1916. Seven stories high, it contains three dining rooms, two ballrooms, 25 guest rooms and full athletic facilities. One of the city's most exclusive social clubs, the membership remains entirely female. Men are permitted to enter as a guest of a member, but must adhere to its strict dress code.
