As transportation infrastructure changed in the city, so to did the streetscapes. The deconstruction of the elevated trains introduced sunlight to streets that had been in shadows for decades. Similarly as streetcars and trolleys were retired and replaced by buses, the streets they traveled needed to be repaved for automobile traffic. This type of infrastructure work was undertaken by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression.
