Bijou Theatre, 1928.

Replacing the mansion of the local Livingston family, the Bijou Theatre opened in November of 1893. Owing to its convenient location in Downtown Brooklyn, the theatre was a smashing success. Originally featuring all live performances, in 1908 Marcus Loew took over operations of the venue and converted it to a movie house with vaudeville performances. Following a final program in May of 1929, Loew's ended its lease of the space and plans were made to raze the theatre for a 30-story office building. That building never came to be. In the late 1950s, a boxy modern building was constructed. Today it houses the New York City Civil Court Kings County.
