The Hamilton Fish House, 21 Stuyvesant Street, ca. 1971.
The Hamilton Fish House (a.k.a. Nicholas and Elizabeth Stuyvesant Fish House, Stuyvesant Fish House), was built in 1803-04 by Peter Stuyvesant, the great-grandson of the last Dutch Director-General of New Amsterdam. The three-story Federal style townhouse sits on a parcel granted to the first Peter Stuyvesant in 1651, by the Dutch West India Company .
The house was a wedding gift to Stuyvesant's daughter Elizabeth and her husband, the Revolutionary War officer Nicholas Fish, a veteran of Valley Forge. Fish served throughout the Revolutionary War and at the age of 18, was commissioned as the youngest Major in the history of the United States army. His son, Hamilton Fish, who later served as Governor of New York and as Secretary of State, was born at this address in 1808.
