Battery Firehouse, May 12, 1936.

This Victorian two-story house was constructed in 1895 as a permanent shoreside headquarters for Engine 57 and the other fireboats that served the harbor and waterfront from the Battery. This waterfront structure was demolished in the early 1940s prior to the construction of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and Battery Park underpass. The boats previously quartered here are moved first to North River Pier 1, then to Pier A. In 1959 the former Engine 57 is designated Marine Co. 1.
