Tour of NYC Indigenous Presence by the Indigenous Scholars of Architecture, Planning, and Design (ISAPD)
Story
ISAPD presents an Urban Archive tour featuring select Indigenous place names in New York, making visible the ongoing connection between historical territories and Indigenous placemaking. ISAPD guides viewers through a series of built and unbuilt projects involving Indigenous communities, including the unbuilt early-twentieth-century American Indian Memorial at Fort Wadsworth. ISAPD members' studio projects propose a new approach to Fort Wadsworth as a national park, while another project in Inwood incorporates themes of Indigeneity, ecology, technology, and urban public interaction.
Tracing the Centre Street Loop
Story
The Centre Street Loop got its start in 1908 with the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company's first Manhattan subway track: the terminal at the foot of the Williamsburg Bridge. The Loop was the first of two BMT Brooklyn Loops designed to connect various Brooklyn Subway lines without requiring new and inefficient terminals in lower Manhattan. Under its original design, the Loop would connect the tracks of Broadway Elevated coming over the Williamsburg (now the BMT Jamaica Line) with Brooklyn Bridge trains originating in Brooklyn. The loop was never completed as planned and was instead incorporated into the BMT Nassau Street Line. These photos document the construction of the tracks that today carry the J and Z trains, and capture glimpses of Manhattan's Civic Center before the completion of the Municipal Building and other prominent structures around Foley Square and City Hall Park.

Post
Man in the excavation cut for the BRT Centre Street Loop, July 22, 1909. The Municipal Building, then under construction, is out of frame at right. Straight ahead is the Technical Press building at 236 William Street. That building has since been demolished; its site was near present-day One Police Plaza and the Brooklyn Bridge offramp toward FDR Drive.
