99-101 Second Avenue, ca. 1985. The pharmacy on this corner dates to 1885. The independent drug store (practically an oxymoron in 21st century New York City) has been run by the Palermo family since the early 1960s. Despite the official name of the business being Second Avenue Chemists, the red neon signage announces the location as Block Drug Store. The shop two doors down, called M. Schacht, was an "appetizing store," which was one that sold foods eaten with bagels (largely fish and dairy products). M. Schacht was known for its lox.
