120 East 92nd Street ARCHITECT: Unknown DATE: 1871 STYLE: Italianate This house has a front yard with iron railing and stands three stories above a high brick basement. A steep flight of wood steps leads to a porch with open-work columns. The handsome paneled double front door with rope moldings is at the right and a pair of French doors at the left. The shuttered windows at all floors have handsome wood frames surmounted by cornices with modillions and this theme is repeated at the prominent cornice of the porch roof. The clapboard front wall is surmounted by an Italianate cornice carried on evenly spaced brackets with panels in between.

Pair of mid-19th century frame houses, East 92nd Street. 1932. No. 120 (right) was built first, in 1859, likely by Albro Howell, the carpenter-builder also responsible for the frame house at No. 160 East 92nd Street, and a number of since-demolished homes from the same period. No. 122 was built twelve years later, in 1871, six years before the construction of wooden homes was banned in Manhattan. Both houses are among the seven surviving wood-frame homes on the Upper East Side.
