Jaburg Brothers bakery supply factory, 1918. This still-standing building was once the home of the Jaburg Brothers Bakery Supply Factory. Constructed in 1912 (as per the year depicted on the front facade), the brick structure was built by the firm which provided bakers with raw materials, such as sugar, as well as baking and confectionery equipment. Two brothers founded the supply company in 1885. By 1915 the business had locations in Staten Island, Manhattan, and Brooklyn, and was one of the largest firms of its kind in the United States. During the First World War, the business was accused of charging more for sugar than the rate set by the Federal Food Board. The Board required they pay the penalty plus the amount they earned from the profiteering to the Red Cross, lest they have their license to sell revoked. The business merged with another firm in 1939, and it is unknown when they vacated this building. Today, the long brick building is home to a mechanics shop and Staten Island Maker Space, a community innovation workshop.
