Walk
When the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers moved uptown, the hotels quickly followed. The gravitational shift of New York's social scene meant that prestigious hotels like the Waldorf-Astoria were no longer in the thick of it. However, developers are never too far behind a trend and soon some of the world's most luxurious hotels sprouted next to the mansions of Fifth Avenue.

Manhattan: Park Avenue - 48th Street (East) Park Avenue, east side, from E. 48th (right) to 49th (left) Streets, showing the newly completed Park Lane Apartment Hotel on what twenty years prior was the Adams Express Company Building site. The architects are Shulte and Weaver. Note at the left margin the Railroad Y.M.C.A. at the N.E. corner of 49th Street. Ten years later this will be razed for the block square site of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Summer 1924. Cift of E.M. Jenks.
