Bennett Building
Post
The Bennet Building, ca. 1928. The Bennett Building is a landmark structure constructed in 1872-1873 by Arthur D. Gilman for James Gordon Bennett Jr., the publisher of the New York Herald. Originally the French Second Empire structure was only six stories tall, but in 1890-1892, the mansard roof was removed and three floors and a penthouse were added by James M. Farnsworth for the building's new owner, John Petit. In 1894, Farnsworth constructed an extension of the building to Ann Street. In each case, Farnsworth's additions carefully mimicked Gilman's original design. The Bennett Building's key feature is its facade: it is the tallest structure in the world with an entirely cast-iron facade. Its richly decorated facades meet at these distinctive curved corners.
