Gapstow Bridge
Post
Gapstow Bridge, ca. 1910. The iconic Gapstow Bridge over a small neck of the Central Park Pond is the second bridge on this site. The first structure was an elaborate wood and iron bridge, designed by Jacob Wrey Mould in 1874 that declined to the point that it needed to be replaced in 1896. The second bridge which still stands is constructed of Manhattan schist. The bridge is 12 feet high, spans 44 feet of water, and has a full length of 76 feet. The bridge has been featured in many films set in New York City, including Weekend at Bernies, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and It Should Happen to You.
