Century Club, ca. 1905-1920. The Century Association (also called the Century Club) is a private social club established in 1847 as a community to promote interest in the fine arts and literature. The club evolved from the Sketch Club, founded in 1829 by editor and poet William Cullen Bryant. The first permanent headquarters for the club was purchased in 1857. The townhouse at 42 East 15th Street (later nos. 109-111) was home to the organization's activities through 1891 when they moved to a new McKim, Mead and White-designed building on 43rd Street. Rendered in a formal Italian Renaissance Revival style, the structure has remained the headquarters for the secretive club since then. Particular architectural features of note include the massive arched entrance, the wreathed round windows at the third-floor level, and the ornate cornice. The 1967 LPC designation report for the building states, " The roster of Centurions reads like the "Who's Who" of American Arts and Letters." Members of the club have included its architect Stanford White, painter Winslow Homer, Louis Comfort Tiffany, and FDR. The club began admitting women in the late 1980s after a prolonged legal battle. Today the club has a membership of around 2500 people, including former Mayor Bloomberg, documentarian Ric Burns, author Robert Caro, and any number of unknown lawyers, doctors, and business people.

MAS Manhattan Survey
Story
Between 1954 and 1957, the Municipal Art Society surveyed historic buildings in all five boroughs to create a database of potential landmarks to preserve. Local residents and MAS staff compiled individual sheets devoted to about 200 buildings. Each sheet outlined the building’s date, location, and style and provided a description and a small photograph. This is the list of Manhattan buildings.

Century Association ARCHITECT: McKim, Mead & White DATE: 1889-91 STYLE: Italian Renaissance Stately in its formal appearance, this four-story Italian Renaissance building, of granite, terra-cotta and brick, is extremely successful in its architectural treatment. McKim, Mead & White, architects for The Century Association, had a reputation for understanding the use of Renaissance elements, and Stanford White, the partner in charge of this project, was renowned for his talent as a designer and for his great ability in using materials, texture and detail in the creation of a building. Working in the true Renaissance spirit, achieving unity and balance, he reestablished the supremacy of form and detail.
