Russian Tea Room, c. 1935. The Russian Tea Room opened in 1927 as an after-hours hangout for the Russian Imperial Ballet and other ex-patriots. The restaurant, with an elite club-like atmosphere, was supposedly founded by a Jacob Zysman though 1929 records list dancer Albertina Rach as its president. The room opened at 145 West 57th Street but moved across the street to 150 West 57th Street after a short while. Before the tea room, this property was an Italianate brownstone residence owned by John F. Pupke. Originally, the building had a stoop occupying the ground floor, though this was removed in 1919 when an automobile showroom moved in. A 1988 issue of the New York Times called it a "brownstone peanut," compared to its towering modern-day neighbors. Kitty-corner of Carnegie Hall, the restaurant was known for its colorful clientele. A pamphlet for the establishment stated, "for more often than not the artist will come to the Russian Tea Room Restaurant straight from the performance, flowers and all." A Siberian émigré, Alexander "Sasha" Maeef is credited as orchestrating this lush environment. He took over the business from 1933 until 1946. In these formative years, patrons could find Russian luxuries like caviar on blini, chicken kiev, and pelmeni. Maeef sold the restaurant to first-generation Russian-American Sidney Kaye, who cloaked the establishment in the kitschy themed rooms that still exist today. Only the facade received a re-do in 2000 that divorced it from its brownstone past. The Russian Tea Room closed in 2002 but re-opened in 2006 with no visible update. Over the years, it has been visited by Michael Douglas, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks, Jackie Kennedy, Anne Bancroft, Barbara Streisand, and Dustin Hoffman.
