Irving Herzberg (b. 1915- d. 1991) took an interest in documenting the quieter moments of daily life, from Orthodox Jews in Williamsburg to beachgoers lounging at the shore at Coney Island. His collection spans his work from 1945 up until his death in 1991.

The Man Who Sold the Bronx
Story

During the 1910s, Joseph P. Day was a real-estate developer on the rise. He'd earned a formidable reputation by the age of 21 after auctioning off large swaths of land in Brooklyn and Queens. Day set his eyes on the Bronx as the next up-and-coming portion of the city. He commissioned photographer William D. Hassler to capture areas of undeveloped land—in effect creating a survey of a quickly growing city. Over two days in 1914, Day sold over four hundred lots of undeveloped land.

In the middle of the 20th century, Wigorot Lundin began making prints of the New York Transit Authority's photographic negatives. Taken in the 1910s and 20s, the photographs show a city in transition, expanding with the advent of new technology. Lundin's Bronx photographs display a borough, growing and consolidating as it becomes further interwoven with transit.
