Holland House
Post
The Holland House was designed by George Edward Harding and William T. Gooch in 1892. The Indiana limestone building was ten stories tall. The royal structure boasted 350 guest's suites, a restaurant with capacity for 300 patrons, second-floor promenade, a foyer lit by electric "torcheres," and a drawing-room in the style of Louis XVI. Notably, the design is a careful copy of the Holland House in London. The main staircase, called the "handsomest in America" by a London magazine, was carved of Siena marble and bronze. Each guest room was equipped with a "Herzog Teleseme," a dial sunk into the wall that allowed quests to communicate directly with the offices downstairs. The quest would move a pointer to a desired item, such as "towel," or "newspaper," and the item would be relayed up to the room.
