Night Presence IV, 1972. Night Presence IV is a 22.5-foot tall free-standing sculpture by Louise Nevelson. The sculpture was originally located at the southeast corner of Central Park but was moved after the original location was decided as "a showcase in which sculptures were changed from time to time," according to an article of the New York Times in 1973. This entrance would later be dedicated to Doris C. Freedman for rotating works of public art. Nevelson's piece now sits at the intersection of 92nd Street and Park Avenue on part of the Park Avenue Mall. Nevelson was a Russian-born New Yorker who gifted this sculpture to the city in her 50th year living in New York. Of the gesture, she said: "New York represents the whole of my conscious life and I thought it fitting that I should give it something of myself."
