My Archive Summer 2019 “This is an eastbound J train of the Brooklyn Broadway/Jamaica Avenue EL entering the Van Siclen Avenue Station above Fulton Street in a photo taken by me in August of 1984. This section of the EL was opened in December 1885 and served as the eastern terminus of Brooklyn's first elevated line, the Lexington Avenue EL (which opened in 1885) and the Brooklyn Broadway EL (which opened in 1888) until 1893 when the line was extended to the then Brooklyn City/Queens County border at Cypress Hills; directly across the street from Cypress Hills Cemetery. This is the oldest stretch of unreconstructed elevated railroad structure still in use in the world.” —Eric Smith
