138 Second Avenue

132-144 Second Avenue, showing Ukrainian businesses and organizations along the avenue at the intersection of 9th Street, ca. 1975. No. 138 Second Avenue is one of just a handful of fine Federal row houses left in the neighborhood. Its bottom floor is occupied by Fresco, a gelato store. The shop is owned and run by Anna, Ilias, and Vanessa Iliopoulos– three siblings who grew up in South Africa and Greece. They considered opening their business in Cyprus or Dubai, but eventually found their way to the East Village of Manhattan. Both they and their customers consider that a very good (and yummy!) thing.

My Archive Summer 2019 “Walking around the then less crowded streets of the East Village in the summer of 1980, one lone young "punk" walks in front of a graffitied facade of a building that has had many lives. I can't find how it served the needy in its original incarnation but by 1980 it was a dentist's office, and is now a massage spa.” —Meredith Marciano
